Wallpapering and Wall coverings

Any wallpaper estimate should include an accurate measurement & estimate of the amount of wallcovering needed for your installation. Too much wallpaper means money needlessly spent; too little means you must reorder and many manufacturers have a minimum when ordering. Since no estimate can be exactly correct, generally when finished, you should have 1 or 2 rolls leftover. These leftovers can be used for repairs if necessary.

Your installation price should include a minimum amount of wall preparation – filling holes, sanding, etc. If more extensive preparation is required, your paperhanger should alert you to this fact and recommend someone who does this work if he cannot do it himself. I also do preparation and painting and a separate estimate is given for this kind of work. My estimate price includes sizing (priming) with R-35. This primer assures good adhesion and will make certain that your wallcovering will not come lose over time.

My installation includes “touching up” with artists colors if necessary. This is sometimes required if the pattern does not match accurately at the seams. It may also be required if the seam color is too dark or too light.

I overlap and double-cut my seams whenever necessary. I am able to do this without cutting into the wall underneath. This assures an accurate matching of pattern and very tight seams.

All glue is removed from the surface of the wallcovering. Glue is sometimes not visible when a job is completed but can cause a deterioration in the surface colors over time.

Overlapping and double cutting is not a new idea or technique in paperhanging. What is new is my use of special metallic tapes to prevent cutting into the wall underneath when overlapping and double cutting. In the past, most manufacturers warned against the practice of overlapping and double-cutting wallpaper because the wall underneath was also cut into, causing damage in the form of seams opening and separating over time. With the risk of wall/seam damage eliminated, double cutting can now be considered for untrimmed wallcoverings, yard goods or any situation where a double-cut improves seam quality and the matching of pattern. This means a significant improvement in the quality of your installation..

In the case of fabrics or other materials where no glue or water can touch the face of the material, overlapping and double-cutting may be an absolute necessity. In addition to keeping glue off the face of the material, the overlap and double-cut assures a tight fit and a “seamless” match. Most overlapped and double cut seams are not visible for this reason.. (Some wallcoverings such as grasscloth or a glossy look will always have visible seams)

Having the choice of overlapping and double-cutting allows the designer to work with any fabric or material without worrying about pattern matching, damage to the material, or damage to the wall underneath. Please call me for more information about this issue.
